Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) caused by the Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) is the most destructive viral disease of bananas. In 2009, a survey was carried out in 43 locations across five regions to assess the presence of BBTD and its associated insect vector, the banana aphid (Pentalonia nigronervosa). No evidence of the disease was found in any of the locations surveyed, and its absence was further confirmed through molecular analyses. However, banana aphids were observed throughout all the 43 locations across five regions at various levels of abundance. Ants were also frequently seen tending aphid colonies, a mutualistic association that helps protect and sustain aphid populations. Although BBTD was not detected during the survey, the widespread presence of its vector highlighted the importance of continued monitoring and the use of healthy planting materials to prevent future disease outbreaks.
