Banana Seed Movement: Insights from Seed Producers

"Banana and plantain are important staple crops and sources of income for millions of households in Cameroon, supporting food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods. However, their production is threatened by Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD), which can spread through infected planting materials and aphid vectors. This survey examined the movement of banana planting materials (“seeds”) across Cameroon by identifying key actors, sources, and pathways within existing seed networks. It also assessed the potential risks of spreading BBTD and other pests and pathogens through these networks. the survey Conducted in three major production regions revealed that the Littoral Region is the main hub for plantain seed multiplication and distribution, including movement to neighboring countries, followed by the Centre Region. Further network analysis will provide a clearer understanding of seed movement patterns and help inform policies and strategies for improved seed system management, BBTD prevention and control, and overall crop health."
