Endosymbiont diversity in the scale insect Stictococcus vayssierei, the African root and tuber scale

The general objective of the project was to enhance our knowledge on the bio-ecology of S. vayssierei, a pest of root and tuber crops in the Congo Basin, for an ultimate goal of minimizing ARTS infestation and in turn increasing yields and productivity of cassava and other root and tuber crops in Central Africa. In this study, we characterized the diversity and prevalence of bacterial endosymbionts associated with the S. vayssierei species complex as these endosymbionts may influence the pest status of the scale insect, and may provide an alternative target for pest control.
