Fruit hosts of fruit flies in Cameroon

The proposed project is a collaborative initiative between icipe, IITA, UoB, MPI-Jena and national institutions in sub-Saharan Africa with the broad objective of increasing income and enhancing nutrition and food security of smallholder families of 4 African countries by improving yield and quality of mango through the introduction of tested and proven IPM technologies for fruit flies and mango seed weevil (MSW). The proposed project builds on a first phase of a Mango IPM project as well as the existing experience of the collaborating institutions to disseminate and promote control technologies based on baiting and male annihilation techniques, biological and microbial control, use of soft pesticides and orchard sanitation in addition to developing, testing and implementing post-harvest treatment technology based on hot water treatment of mango for control of key quarantine fruit fly species. A community-based framework for transfer of technologies involving growers, grower association, private sector and NARS coupled with project benchmarking approach are proposed to ensure that impact pathways lead to adoption by the ultimate beneficiaries – resource poor users in the 4 target countries (and beyond).
