SOYBEAN BREEDDING STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

Soybean is a crop with the highest nutritional composition (protein and oil), making it the ideal crop to fight malnutrition and high demand in the market. However, the attention given to nutritional quality by the African breeding programs, including the IITA soybean breeding program, has been low, mainly because of the low priority given to nutritional composition in the soybean value chain. However, recently, processors and end users are demanding nutritionally enhanced soybean varieties due to the growing demand of the poultry and fishery industries for high-protein feeds. In addition, the use of high throughput phenotyping using drone technologies has been commended for rapid high throughput phenotypic workflow for soybean yield, biomass plant height, and days to maturity estimation.
