Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Data Collection

Data capturing is a key component of any trial, given that it drives the decisions in the breeding programs. Without good data, the main purpose for which the trial is established would be lost. Data collection is therefore a critical component that involves gathering precise and reliable information on various traits and characteristics of the plants being studied. This data is essential for evaluating the performance of different plant varieties, identifying desirable traits, and making informed breeding decisions. Data collection comes in phases: Seedling phase, vegetative phase, reproductive (flowering and podding), maturity and post-harvest. Generally, all the data recording is performed on the 2 central rows of the 4 row plots. Effective data collection requires proper planning which include prior choosing of the traits to be measured, standardization of methods, identifying appropriate tools and instruments for measurements, developing measurement protocols and ensuring the personnel involved in data capture are well trained.
