Appui a la Prévention et a la Gestion de la Maladie du Bunchy Top des Bananiers au Cameroun, Gabon et Guinée Equatoriale

Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) caused by the Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) is the most destructive viral disease of bananas. In 2016-17, a survey was carried out in 3 countries (Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea Congo) to assess the presence of BBTD and its associated insect vector, the banana aphid (Pentalonia nigronervosa). BBTD was found in the Ambam district in South Cameroon; no BBTD was found in the surveyed locations of Congo or Equatorial Guinea as confirmed by molecular analyses. However, banana aphids were observed throughout all the three countries at various levels of incidence. Ants were also frequently seen tending aphid colonies, a mutualistic association that helps protect and sustain aphid populations.
